Ceramic Filters for Cast Aluminum

In the aluminum casting process, molten aluminum usually contains entrained solids, which are harmful to the final cast metal product. These entrained solids usually come from three sources. Some are alumina particles, which are sucked into the liquid stream from the floating oxide layer on their surface. Some of the entrained particles are fragments of the furnace lining, conveyor troughs, and other parts of the molten aluminum processing equipment, which are eroded and entrained in the flowing aluminum stream. Some particles are precipitates of insoluble impurities, such as intermetallic compounds, borides, carbides, or precipitates of other aluminum compounds, such as chlorides.

Ceramic filters for cast aluminum are used to remove entrained solids from molten aluminum alloys before casting. When the molten aluminum solidifies, when these inclusions appear in the final cast product, they will cause the final aluminum product to have reduced ductility or poor trimming properties. Therefore, it is important to remove the entrained solids from the molten aluminum before casting the molten aluminum into a solid.
